TEXT2 Tim. 2:15

INTRODUCTION:

A.      PAUL WAS IN PRISON – TIMOTHY PREACHING IN EPHESUS.

B.      TIMOTHY ENTRUSTED WITH THE JOB OF TEACHING (2:2).

          1.       They need to know the pattern to follow it (1:13).

          2.       They needed to be able to defend the truth (1:14).

C.      BEFORE TIMOTHY COULD TEACH IT, HE HAD TO KNOW THE WORD, TOO.

D.      IN THE ASSEMBLY WE STUDY THE WORD.  WHY IS THIS IMPORTANT?

I.      GOD TALKS TO US THROUGH THE BIBLE.

A.      GOD SPEAKS THROUGH HIS SON (Heb. 1:1-2).

C.      JESUS SPEAKS THROUGH THE HOLY SPIRIT (John 14:2616:12-13).

D.      THE SPIRIT SEARCHES THE DEEP THINGS OF GOD AND DECLARES THEM TO

          THE APOSTLES (1 Cor. 2:10-13).

E.      GOD’S PLAN FOR SAVING US WAS THUS REVEALED TO THE APOSTLES WHO

SPOKE AND WROTE THE THINGS THEY WERE TOLD (Eph. 3:3-5).

F.      THE RESULT IS A REVELATION OF GOD’S MIND (1 Cor. 2:16).

II.     BIBLE STUDY IS NECESSARY FOR SALVATION.

A.      WHERE DOES FAITH COME FROM? (Rom. 10:17John 20:29-30).

B.      THE GOSPEL IS GOD’S POWER TO SAVE (Rom. 1:16James. 1:21).

C.      2 Tim. 3:15  “WISE UNTO SALVATION”.

D.      HOW?  (Rom. 1:16-17Titus 2:11-122 Tim. 3:16-17).

E.      IN THE SCRIPTURES IS ETERNAL LIFE (John 5:39-40).  & JUDGMENT (12:48).

III.    THE ADMONITIONS PAUL GIVES TIMOTHY.

A.      2 Tim. 2:13-14.  “Hold the pattern of sound words …”

B.      2:2.  “…commit thou to faithful men who shall be able to teacher others also.

C.      2:15.  “… approved unto God … handling aright the word of truth.”

D.      3:14.  “… abide in the things which thou has learned …”

E.      4:2, 5.  “;preach the word … do the work of an evangelist….”

IV.   THE WARNINGS OF PAUL TO TIMOTHY.

A.      2:14, 23.  AGAINST FOOLISH AND IGNORANT QUESTIONINGS.

B.      2:223:1-5.  AGAINST YOUTHFUL LUSTS AND WORLDLINESS

C.      3:5.  AGAINST HYPOCRISY.

D.      2:16-18; 4:3-4. ESPECIALLY AGAINST TEACHERS OF ERROR (Phil. 1:16Jude 3).

V.    BUT WHY IN THE ASSEMBLY?

A.      THE EXAMPLE OF THE EARLY CHURCH (Acts 11:2620:7ff.).

          1.       When non-christians are there.

          2.       When much is covered with little opportunity otherwise.

B.      EDIFICATION OF THE BODY (Eph. 4:11-16Acts 20:32;  1 Thess. 5:11).

C.      AN OPPORTUNITY TO PROVOKE THROUGH THE WORD (Heb. 10:24-25).

CONCLUSION:

A.      THE GOSPEL IS GOD’S POWER (Rom. 1:16).

B.      THEREFORE IT IS SUFFICIENT (2 Tim. 3:16-17).

C.      LET’S PUT AWAY HUMAN WORKS THAT EXPRESS HUMAN PHILOSOPHIES

          (Col. 2:8Matt. 15:8-9).

D.      THE BIBLE ONLY WILL BE OUR GUIDE (Acts 17:11).
