INTRODUCTION:

A.      PAUL INSTRUCTS TIMOTHY – CONTINUING WILL SAVE HIM AND OTHERS.

B.      TWO AREAS OF CONCERN.

          1.       Personal conduct.

          2.       Teaching.

C.      NEED TO EXAMINE WHAT PAUL SAID ABOUT TIMOTHY’S LIFE & WORK.

I.      PAUL’S CONCERN FOR TIMOTHY’S PERSONAL LIFE.

TAKE HEED TO THYSELF.” – vs. 16

A.      “LET NO MAN DESPISE THY YOUTH.”  AS A YOUNG PREACHER( vs. 12 ).

B.      CONNECTED WITH HIS GOOD EXAMPLE.

          1.       Speech( Eph. 4:29;  Col. 4:16 ).

          2.       Manner of life – conduct( Matt. 5:13-16 – J. C. Roady ).

          3.       Love( John 13:34-35;  1 John 3:16-18 ).

          4.       Faith( Phil. 4:4-7 ).

          5.       Purity( 2 Tim. 2:22;  Matt. 6:22-24 ).

II.     PAUL’S CONCERN FOR HIS WORK.

TAKE HEED TOTEACHING.” – vs. 16

A.      TIMOTHY WAS TO GIVE HEED TO “READING.”

          1.       anagnosis, ( Acts 13:15;  2 Cor. 3:14 ).  Refers to public reading of the law. 

                   Here it could include public and private.

          2.       What is read is what makes reading important( Rom. 1:16-17;  James 1:21 ).

          3.       Diligent study necessary for Timothy to do a good job( 2 Tim. 2:15 ).

B.      GIVE HEED TO EXHORTATION.

          1.       “To urge earnestly by advice, warning, etc. (to do what is proper or required)

                    admonish strongly.” ( Webster ).

          2.       Involves hard work( 2 Tim. 4:2;  Titus 2:14 ).

          3.       Objective involves diplomacy( 2 Tim. 2:24-26 ).

C.      GIVE TO TEACHING OR DOCTRINE è Here the act of teaching.

          1.       Rather than that which is taught.

          2.       The primary workTo Teach!

          3.       Too many are given deacon’s or pastor’s work.

          4.       He is to give heed to his teaching, might include several things.

                   a.       Must be the Truth( 2 Pet. 2:1;  2 Tim. 2:15 ).

                   b.       Must be well balanced( Acts 20:20, 26-27;  2 Tim. 4:2 ).

                   c.       Must have purpose( vs. 16;  James 5:19-20 ).

III.    “NEGLECT NOT THE GIFT.”

A.      NOT THE GIFT OF PROPHECY – PROPHESIED HE WOULD GET IT.

B.      LAYING ON OF HANDS NOT BY APOSTLES BUT ELDERS.

          1.       Miracles came by laying on of apostles hands( Acts 8:18 ).

          2.       There are non-miraculous gifts( Eph. 4:11-12 ).

          3.       These confirmed by laying on of hands, also( Acts 13:3;  6:6 ).

          4.       Prophecy played this part – led to finding Timothy in Lystra( 1:18 ).

IV.   vs. 15. WHOLLY GIVEN TO THESE THINGS( 2 Tim. 2:3-4 ).

CONCLUSIONTHE DESIRED RESULT( vs. 16 ).
