Hell and Who Will Be There

INTRODUCTION:

A.  JESUS TAUGHT THERE IS A HELL.

B.  NOT A POPULAR TOPIC.

          1.  Some preachers avoid it on the basis of negativity.

          2.  Some don’t believe in hell – just superstition or myth.  God’s bogyman.

          3.  Some don’t know what to say.  Some preache error.

          4.  Jesus preached on it often.  11 out of 12 times discussed, Jesus was the one.

C.  IF YOU DON’T BELIEVE IN HELL, YOU DON’T BELIEVE THE BIBLE!

          1.  Is it just too terrible to believe?

          2.  Is cancer or drowning too terrible to believe?

D.  TWO QUESTIONS TO ANSWER:

          1.  What is hell?

          2.  Who will be there?

I.      WHAT IS HELL?

A.  MUCH CONFUSION BECAUSE OF TRANSLATIONS.  KJV is misleading.

          2.  Definitions:

                   a.  Sheol – Translated “grave,” “hell,” or “pit.  “It really means the unseen world, the

                             state of the dead, and is the equivalent of the Gr. Haides, by which the word

                             is translated in the LXX.” (James Orr, ISBE).

                   b.  Haides – The unseen – “the common receptacle of disembodied spirits” (Thayer).

                   c.  Gehenna – “the valley of the sons of Hinnom"), a deep, narrow glen to the south

                             of Jerusalem, where the idolatrous Jews offered their children in sacrifice to

                             Molech (2 Chron 28:3; 33:6; Jer 7:31; 19:2-6). This valley afterwards

                             became the common receptacle for all the refuse of the city. Here the dead

                             bodies of animals and of criminals, and all kinds of filth, were cast and

                             consumed by fire   kept always burning.” (from Easton's Bible Dictionary).

                   d.  Tartarus – “Regarded by the ancient Greeks as the abode of the wicked dead,

                             where they suffer punishment of the evil deeds.” (Thayer,  p. 615).

                             Found in 2 Pet. 2:4.  Compare Luke 16:23.

                   d.  Coexistent with heaven.

                             1)  Rev. 20:107:15.  Day and Night.

                             2)  Rev. 21:15  No night in heaven.  Matt. 25:30.  Eternal darkness.

                             3)  If one’s eternal, so’s the other (Matt. 25:46).  One ends, so does the other.

          2.  Anguish & Tribulation (Rom. 2:8-9Heb. 10:28-29).  Sorer punishment than death.

          3.  Both body and soul are destroyed there (Matt. 10:28).

II.     WHO WILL BE THERE?

B.  THOSE WITH HATEFUL, EVIL MINDS (Matt. 5:27-30).

C.  HYPOCRITES (Matt. 23:27-30).

D.  TEACHERS OF ERROR (Gal. 1:8-92 Pet. 2:1-3).

E.  AND THEIR FOLLOWERS (Matt. 15:13-14).

F.  BACKSLIDERS (2 Pet. 2:20-22Heb. 10:39).

G.  THOSE WHO SERVE THE FLESH (1 Cor. 6:9-10Rev. 21:8).

H.  THE NEGLIGENT (Heb. 2:1-3), or UNPREPARED (Matt. 25:13).
