Jesus, Our Hope

TEXT:  1 Tim. 1:1-2

INTRODUCTION:

A.      LIFE UNCERTAIN - FILLED WITH SADNESS AND TURMOIL( Job 14:1 ).

B.      WE HAVE AN ANCHOR - HOPE( Heb. 6:18-19 ).

I.      WHAT IS HOPE?

A.      KEEP THE SPOON!

B.      DESIRE + EXPECTATION.

          1.       Must have a basis - The farmer sows in hope( 1 Cor. 9:10 ).

          2.       The basis of our hope - what we believe( Heb. 11:1 ).

          3.       Faith based on God's promise in his word( Rom. 10:17;  2 Tim. 2:11-13 ).

II.     THE THINGS HOPED FOR.

A.      SALVATION( 1 Thess. 5:8-10;  Rom. 8:24 ).

          1.       Saved from what?  Sins( Matt. 1:21 ).

          2.       Sin condemns( Rom. 6:23 ).

          3.       In Jesus we have forgiveness( Col. 1:13-14;  Eph. 1:7;  1 Pet. 2:24 ).

B.      REDEMPTION OF THE BODY( Rom. 8:19-24 ).

          1.       This is corruptable - it dies( 1 Cor. 15:19 ).

          2.       The mortal will put immortality( vs. 52-54 ).

          3.       Raised to conform to him( Acts 24:14-15;  Phil. 3:20-21;  1 John 3:2-3 ).

C.      ETERNAL LIFE( Titus 1:2;  Rom. 6:22-23;  Rom. 8:18 ).

III.    THE MEANS OF OUR HOPE.

A.      JESUS IS THE ONLY SOURCE OF HOPE( 1 Tim. 1:1;  John 14:6 ).

          1.       Made possible our deliverance from sin( 1 Pet. 2:24 ).

          2.       John 14:1-3.  Because of his promise we hope to be with him.

B.      WITH RESPECT TO:

          1.       Alienation from God( Isa. 59:1-2 ).

                             He is our reconciliation( 2 Cor. 5:17-20;  Eph. 2:13-17 ).

          2.       Wrath or penalty of law( Rom. 3:23;  Heb. 2:1-3 ).

                             Our propitiation( Rom. 3:24-26 ).  hilasterion-"relating to an appeasing

                             or expiating, having placating or expiating force, expiatory; a means of

                             appeasing or expiating, a propitiation" (Thayer).  Expiate - "to make

                             amends or reparation for (wrongdoing or guilt);  atone for.  to pay the

                             penalty of;  suffer for" (Webster).

          3.       Guilt, he put away sin( Heb. 9:26 ).

          4.       Bondage to sin

                   He is our ransom( 1 Tim. 2:6 ).  antilutron-"what is given in exchange

                             for another as the price of his redemption, ransom" (Thayer).

                             Our redeemer( Titus 2:14;  Eph. 1:7;  1 Pet. 1:18-19 ).  lutroo- "to

                             redeem, to liberate by payment of ransom" (Thayer).

C.      HE IS ALL WE NEED IN OUR DESIRE TO BE RECONCILED.

          1.       Shepherd( Heb. 13:20 ).

          2.       King( Acts 2:30-33 ).

          3.       Prophet( Acts 3:22 ).

          4.       High Priest( Heb. 4:14-16 ).

          5.       Mediator( 1 Tim. 2:5 ).

D.      ALL SPIRITUAL BLESSING IS IN CHRIST( Eph. 1:3;  Col. 2:9-10 ).

CONCLUSION:

A.      JESUS IS OUR HOPE( Col. 1:27 ).

B.      OUR HOPE IS ASSURED

          1.       Through his resurrection( 1 Pet. 1:3 ).

          2.       Through his promise( Heb. 6:17-19 ).

C.      LET US HOLD FAST( Heb. 10:23;  6:11-12;  Rom. 8:24-25 ).
