The Lord’s Supper -1
A. LESSONS REQUESTED.
1. The whole counsel of God.
2. Need to answer some questions & correct some abuses.
3. We need to come to a unity of what we practice and teach.
B. COULD WE BE IN ERROR?
A. IN THE BIBLE.
1. “Lord’s supper.” (1 Cor. 11:20). NOT “love feast.”
2. “Table of the Lord” (10:21).
3. “Communion” (10:16-17). koinonia
4. “Breaking of bread” (Acts 2:42; 20:7).
“had little vogue after NT times” (ISBE).
B. NOT IN THE BIBLE.
1. “Eucharist.” eucharistesas, “Grateful, thankfulness, given of thanks. Eventually used
of the whole service, the consecration of the elements, or the elements themselves.”
2nd Century, derives from Jesus’ action in the institution (Matt. 26:26-27).

A. GOD’S ETERNAL PURPOSE (Eph. 3:11).
1. Involved the death of Jesus (1 Pet. 1:18-20).
2. Involved the church (Eph. 3:10; 1:23).
3. Involved teaching (Eph. 1:9-11; 1 Cor. 2:6-13).
B. CONNECTION WITH THE PASSOVER.
1. Jesus & the disciples eat the Passover early (Luke 22:7-16).
2. It was the day of sacrifice (vs. 7; Mark 14:12).
3. The priests and others had not eaten (John 18:28; 19:14).
4. Jesus died on the Preparation Day (19:31).
C. SYMBOLISM OF PASSOVER – TYPE AND ANTETYPE.
1. Passover Involved:
a. A lamb dying (Ex. 12:3).
b. A memorial (Ex. 13:3-10).
c. Deliverance, haste, unleavened bread (Deut. 16:1-8).
2. The Lord’s Supper Involves:
a. Jesus is our lamb (John 1:29)
- without blemish (Ex. 12:5; 1 Pet. 1:18-19; 2:21-24).
- the blood to be sprinkled (Ex. 12:7, 13; 1 Pet. 1:2).
b. A memorial (1 Cor. 11:23-24; 1 Cor. 5:7).
c. Deliverance remembered.
A. THE ORDER:
1. Took bread, blessed (gave thanks), brake, in remembrance, body.
2. Took the cup, gave thanks, gave it to all, memorial, blood.
B. THE ELEMENTS:
1. Unleavened bread (Matt. 26:26; Ex. 12:19). Our Passover (1 Cor. 5:7-8).
2. Fruit of the vine, oinos, grape juice, fermented or fresh.
C. THE DAY (Acts 20:7).
