The Ten Commandments

TEXTExodus 20:1-17;  Rom. 15:4

INTRODUCTION:

A.      TEN COMMANDMENTS NAILED TO THE CROSS( Col. 2:13-14 ).

B.      REFLECT THE CHARACTER OF GOD( Rom. 15:4 ).

C.      NEW TESTAMENT COMPARISONS WITH THE 10 COMMANDMENTS.

I.      THOU SHALT HAVE NO OTHER GODS BEFORE ME.

A.      All are intended to worship God( Rev. 4:11;  5:13 ).

B.      They should worship nothing else( Mat. 4:10;  Acts 10:24-26;

          Rev. 22:9 ).  Emphasizes pagan worship's condemnation( Isa. 44:6 )

II.     THOU SHALT NOT MAKE UNTO THEE A GRAVEN IMAGE.

A.      God is to be worshipped in spirit and truth( John 4:24 ).

B.      It is sinful to attempt to worship him under any material

          forms or images( Acts 17:24-29;  Rom. 1:20-25;  Ex. 32:1-5 ).

C.      God cannot and will not suffer any of his glory to be

          given to anything else( Deut. 29:20;  32:21 ).

III.    DON'T TAKE THE NAME OF JEHOVAH THY GOD IN VAIN.

A.      all men speak of God with the most profound reverence.

B.      any irreverent use of God's names or titles is very sinful

          ( 4:29;  12:28-29 ).

C.      God is jealous of his name, as he is also of his person.

IV.   REMEMBER THE SABBATH DAY TO KEEP IT HOLY.

A.      necessity of sanctifying to the Lord a portion of our time.

B.      That this should be such as God has himself appointed

          ( Acts 20:7;  1 Cor. 16:1-2;  Rev. 1:10;  Col. 2:16-17 ).

C.      That we should encourage and require those under our

          authority to do the same( Eph. 6:4 ).

V.    HONOR THY FATHER AND THY MOTHER.

A.      That our parents and all in authority should be honored

          and respected( Eph. 6:1-4;  1 Pet. 2:13-17;  2 Pet. 2:9-11 ).

B.      more involved than just revering( Mat.15:3-6;  Eph.6:1 ).

VI.   THOU SHALT NOT KILL.

A.      That we should use all lawful means to preserve the

          lives, the health, and the happiness all men( Mat. 7:12 ).

B.      avoid ANYthing of an opposite tendency

          ( Mat. 5:21-26;  1 John 3:15 ).

VII.  THOU SHALT NOT COMMIT ADULTERY.

A.      All thoughts, words, and actions should remain pure

          ( Phil. 4:8;  2 Tim. 2:22 ).

B.      We should avoid everything that may serve to create

          within us any impure thoughts or feelings

          ( Mat. 5:27-32;  James 1:13-16 ).

VIII. THOU SHALT NOT STEAL( Eph. 4:28;  2 Thes. 3:10-13 ).

IX.   THOU SHALT NOT BEAR FALSE WITNESS

        ( Prov. 6:12-19;  26:18-28 ).

X.    THOU SHALT NOT COVET.

A.      We should be content with such things as we have

          ( 1 Tim. 6:6-8;  Phil. 4:11;  Luke 12:15 ).

B.      Covetousness is a form of idolatry( Col. 3:5 ).

CONCLUSIONTHE VALUE OF THE TEN COMMANDANTS.

A.      COMPARE OTHER LAWS.  IS THERE ANOTHER OF THAT AGE SO

          SUPREME?

B.      PRINCIPLES OF THE TEN COMMANDMENTS ARE GOOD( Rom. 7:7-8 ).

C.      THE LAW OF MOSES IS DONE AWAY( Heb. 8:6-13;  Rom. 7:1-6 ).
