Who Is This?

TEXT: Luke 9:7-9

INTRODUCTION:

A. THE OPINIONS OF SOME:

1. Some deny his existence.

2. Some claim he was a good man – Noble Philosopher.

3. Deeper awareness of deity, but not divine.

4. Divine, but divested himself of his divinity or powers.

B. THE CLAIMS OF JESUS. "SON OF MAN" WITH AN EARTHLY MOTHER.

1. Isa. 7:14. "Son of man." Unique. Immanuel – "God with us" ( Col. 2:9 ).

2. If he wasn’t the Son of God, he was a liar and not a good man.

C. LET’S EXAMINE THE CLAIMS AND THE EVIDENCE.

I. THE CLAIMS OF JESUS.

A. IN RELATION TO THE FATHER.

1. John 7:28-30; 8:55. "I know…" Grk. Full and complete knowledge.

2. John 14:9. Reveals the Father.

3. John 10:30. Equality ( John 5:17-18 ).

4. John 5:21-23. Does the Father’s work.

5. John 17:5. Before the world – eternal ( John 8:58 ).

6. John 2:25. Knew what was in man.

B. IN RELATION TO THE MESSIANIC HOPE.

1. John 4:25-26. Claimed to be the Messiah.

2. John 9:35-37. Son of God.

3. John 18:37. The King of Truth.

4. John 7:16-17. God’s prophet.

5. John 14:6. The Mediator. The only way ( John 10:1 ).

C. IN RELATION TO HUMAN NEEDS.

1. What did man need? ( Eph. 2:1-3 ).

2. What does Jesus provide? ( John 3:14-15; 4;13-14; 6:35 ).

3. John 8:12. The Light of the World.

II. THE EVIDENCE.

A. HUMAN EVIDENCE:

1. Early disciples ( John 1:41-51 ).

2. Nicodemus ( John 3:1-2; 19:39 ).

3. The Samaritan Woman ( John 4:29, 42 ).

4. Peter ( John 6:66-69 ).

5. Officers sent by the priests ( John 7:44-46 ).

6. The blind man ( John 9:11, 15, 17, 24-25, 30-33, 35-38 ).

7. The Pharisees ( John 1:47-48 ).

8. At the Supper ( John 16:29-30 ).

10. Thomas ( John 20:24-29 ).

11. John himself ( John 19:35; 20:30-31 ).

B. DIVINE EVIDENCE:

1. John 2:1-11. Turned the water to wine.

2. John 4:46-54. Healing the nobleman’s son.

3. John 5:1-9. Healing the man who had been paralyzed 38 years.

4. John 6:1-14. Feeding the 5,000.

5. John 6:16-21. Walks on the water.

6. John 9. Healed the blind man.

7. John 11:31-44. Raised Lazarus.

C. THE LIFE THAT HE LIVED.

1. John 8:46. His sinless life ( 1 Pet. 2:21-24; John 18:38; Matt. 27:3-5 ).

2. John 19:32-37. Fulfilled prophecy. ( Luke 24:27, 24; Acts 3:18, 24 ).

D. THE RESURRECTION ( 1 John 1:1-4; Rom. 1:4 ).

CONCLUSION:

A. IF JESUS IS WHO HE CLAIMS TO BE, WHAT MUST WE DO?
